Contemporary Zouk or soulzouk is a Brazilian
dance that comes from Lambada and slowly has
been growing into the Latin communities and
becoming the new cool dance in the Latin clubs
around the world. Its slow and sensual choreography
is full of torsions, hair throws, leg leads
and it allows interpretation of several different
music styles such as Zouk Love Music, R&B,
Hip-Hop and Reggeaton.
Zouk music was originated in the mid 1980s in
the two French Overseas Departments of Guadeloupe
and Martinique in the Caribbean. It was created
by black Caribbeans who spoke creole languages.
It is sung mostly in Antillean creole. Zouk
means "party" or "festival" in the local Antillean
Creole of French, although the word originally
referred to, and is still used to refer to,
a popular dance, based on the Polish dance,
the mazurka, that was introduced to the French
Caribbean in the 19th Century. In Africa, it
is popular in franco- and lusophone countries.
In Europe it is particularly popular in France,
and in North America the Canadian province of
Quebec. Zouk is very popular in the French Caribbean,
South America: (Brazil etc.) and Africa: (Angola,
Cape Verde, Réunion, Mozambique etc.)

This is a progressive series of Forro &
Samba de Gafieira lessons, every week the instructor
will review the forro & Samba de Gafieiria
steps learned previously and teach the new figures.
FORRO is a casual
Brazilian dance. Some Forro steps can be seen
in Cumbia and others in Ballroom Samba. There
are different Forro music styles which allows
for different dance styles including the Latin
Hustle. Another authentic Brazilian dance is
Samba de Gafieira.Forro, the dance, evolved
in north-eastern Brazil as a dance companion
to Forro music. Some say the word Forró
came from the English expression 'for all',
since this an easy dance for that everybody
can learn, - a dance for all. Others say the
word derives from forrobodó, a happy
Brazilian party. A Forró band is usually
comprised of an accordion, a zabumba (drum),
and a triangle.
SAMBA
DE GAFIEIRA is a dance hall which in the past
was frequented by the working-class in Brazil.
Some gafieira have evolved into clubs that are
now part of guided tours in Rio de Janeiro.
Samba de Gafieira means Dancehall or Club Samba.
It is a partner dance that that incorporates
Carnival Samba, Salsa and Argentine Tango concepts.
It is sometimes referred to as the Brazilian
Tango.
Samba de Gafieira is a dance suitable for all
ages and even though this dance is well established
in Brazil, it continues to attract younger members
because of its vitality and room for creativity.
It can be danced to a variety of Latin rhythms.
Samba de Gafieira originated in the 1940's in
Rio de Janeiro's gafieira (working-class dance
halls).
Since its inception, Samba de Gafieira has changed
and evolved with the times and the music. Today
it is a modern, authentic Brazilian dance
Always remember that the more you practice
what you learn in class the more you get out
of your next class. The most important thing
is to dance, smile, be happy and express yourself
through the movements that you learn in class.

Samba no Pe Lessons

This is a progressive
serie of Samba lessons in a Samba group class
format, every week the Samba instructor will
review the Samba steps learned previously and
teach the new Samba figures.
Samba
no pé
is a solo dance that is most often danced impromptu
when samba music is played. The basic movement
involves a straight body and a bending of one
knee at a time. The feet move very slightly
- only a few inches at a time. The rhythm is
2/4, with 3 steps per measure. It can be thought
of as a step-ball-change.It can be described
calling it and-a-one, and-a-two, then back to
one. The basic movement is the same to either
side, where one foot moves to the outside lifting
up just before the first beat (i.e. the right
leg moves slightly to the right) and leg is
kept straight as a . The other foot moves slightly
towards the front, and closer to the first foot.
The second leg bends lightly at the knee so
that the left side of the hip lowers and the
right side appears to move higher. The weight
is shifted to this inside foot briefly for the
next "and-a", then shifted back to the outside
foot on the "two", and the same series of actions
is repeated towards the other side.
The dance
simply follows the beat of the music and can
go from average pace to very fast. Men dance
with the whole foot on the ground while women,
often wearing heels, dance just on the balls
of the foot. Professionals may change the steps
slightly, taking 4 steps per measure instead
of 3, and often add various arm movements depending
on the mood of the music.
