Forro Imersion Workshop for
Beginners and Up

4:30-6:30 PM
Workshop + 30 minute Forro practice $23.00 dollars.

A dance out of Northeast Brazil. It is danced all over Brazil, and even in New York City. Some people say that the word "forró" comes from the English words "for all", which meant that everyone was welcome to the parties organized by the English, who were building roads in Northeast Brazil, and holding parties for their Brazilian employees. But the word "forró", probably comes from the word "forrobodó", which meant the popular parties powered by music, dance and "cachaça". A Forró band is usually comprised of an accordion, a zabumba (drum), and a triangle.
For the men, you will learn how to lead your partner. You will learn how to dance to the different rhythms of forro music, and will have a chance to practice the steps with different partners in class.
After you learn the basic steps you will learn some choreographed movements to use on your own when you are dancing forro with your friends. Always remember that the more you practice what you learn in class the more you get out of your next class. The most important thing is to dance, smile, be happy and express yourself through the movements that you learn in class.

Samba Imersion Workshop for
Beginners and Up

6:30-8:00 PM
Workshop + 30 minute Samba Gafieira practice $23.00 dollars

Let's start from the meaning of "gafieira."
GAFIEIRA - At the end of the nineteenth century, the scene Rio played host to the emergence of dancing halls and festivals, called "dance halls". These establishments frequented by the poorest sections of society, have spread until the 60th of the next century. During this period, between one dance and another, the climate of enthusiasm and strong alcoholic beverages collaborated for people to commit some blunders. Hence the origin of the name gaff.
SAMBA DE GAFIEIRA is a partner dance completely different from International Ballroom Samba. It appeared in the 40s and it gets its name from the Gafieira - popular urban nightclubs of Rio de Janeiro at that time. It is originally from Rio de Janeiro, and is the partner version of the world-renowned Brazilian dance, SAMBA. The dance derived from the Maxixe and followed the arrival of the Choro (another samba musical style). It left most of the Maxixe's Polka elements behind but maintained the entwined leg movements of the Argentine Tango, although adopting a more relaxed posture than the later. Many see this form of Samba as a combination of Waltz and Tango and several Brazilian dancing academies actually use elements and techniques of these two dances to teach Samba de Gafieira movements and choreographies. This style is present in dance academies worldwide. Samba de Gafieira is a stylish, beautiful and creative couple dance. It is has energetic movements and connection between the couple. Samba de Gafieira can be danced (with the exception of fast carnival songs) to Bossa Nova, pagode, choro, samba canção, and others hot paced sambas. Through its unique combination of dance genres and Samba styles, Samba de Gafieira establishes its own identity, allowing the dancer to express both grace and playfulness with intimacy and strength.
